Installing renewable energy products such as ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps can make a huge difference to the lives of your residents. However, the heat efficiency gains that can be made are significantly increased when a property is correctly insulated.
Ice Energy is able to provide External Wall Insulation (EWI) to enhance the heating experience of your residents and offer potential further reductions in fuel costs. We may even be able to provide external wall insulation measures as part of the funding schemes we have access to.
What is External Wall Insulation (EWI)?
External Wall Insulation (EWI) is the application of an insulation layer to the outside of a building in order to improve the building's energy efficiency. By minimising heat loss in cold weather and heat gain in warmer weather, EWI creates a much more comfortable and healthier living environment and helps reduce heating costs.
EWI is a composite system made up of three basic components: an insulant, a fixing and a render or cladding. The insulant is secured to the wall using special adhesives or purpose-made fixing screws / dowells. The final surface which provides both the aesthetic and weather-proofing functions of the wall is usually a coloured render.
How does External Wall Insulation (EWI) work and what are the benefits?
External Wall Insulation (EWI) insulates the walls which helps reduce heat loss in cold weather and heat gain in warm weather. The result is a reduction in heating costs with less risk of condensation and damp walls.
In addition to reducing heat loss, EWI can enable heat pumps to work even more efficiently and result in significantly reduced fuel bills.
The benefits of external wall insulation (EWI) go beyond thermal performance as it can also protect the fabric of a property. EWI systems offer a weather-proof coating minimising the risk of weather damage and are also robust with impressive impact resistance.
EWI systems offer properties a fresh, attractive façade which is ideal for regeneration projects within housing stock.
How much impact can External Wall Insulation (EWI) have on heating bills?
In a poorly insulated property it is estimated that up to one-third of the heat produced by a central heating system is lost through the walls and roof. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates that heating costs can be reduced by up to 40% by installing EWI to solid walls. Just think what that could mean for your residents.
